On Friday, I finished my Laminaria (that’s a Ravelry link – I’ll try to post some pictures here this weekend). I was home from work with a bit of a stomach bug (that just won’t seem to go away!), so I got to spend the day knitting and watching episodes of the X-Files. Of course when I finished the shawl it needed to be blocked, so, genius that I am, I gave my bed over to the Laminaria and spent the rest of the afternoon curled on the futon chair instead. But the important thing is that I got to show off my shawl at the play that night. Who cares if it was 80 degrees and humid? (more…)

June 30, 2008Reacting to the Supreme Court
June 26, 2008Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled that the rape of a child is not grounds for the death penalty. I, for one, agree with their decision. Of course, being of the bleeding-heart liberal persuasion, I find it hard to come up with any situation in which putting someone to death is the right answer, but even putting that single-mindedness aside, I think that this is a good ruling. Motivation, or a lack thereof
June 25, 2008Right now, I should be learning my understudy lines for Saturday (ok, if we’re going to be picky, I should really be working. It’s a slow day, though.) One of the other girls in the cast – the one who plays 4-5 small parts in the play – is going to be out of town for the last night of the show, so I’m taking her second-act roles, while “Margaret” takes her first-act ones. It’s nice since, for one night, I will spend four times my usual amount of time on stage AND do some swordfighting. But, on the other hand, I have to actually learn her lines. (more…)
Perfecting the art of thumb-twiddling
June 19, 2008For all of you who were on the edge of your seat in suspense after my last post… I decided to tink. Despite the sage advice from Penny and others, I had not used lifelines. I’ve never used them, in fact. I know it’s a good idea, but that cocky, living-on-the-edge side of me says that I don’t need to. (That’s right, my main form of rebellion is to not use lifelines while knitting lace shawls.) (more…)
A Knitter’s Dilemma
June 18, 2008Just as a warning, this will be incredibly boring for non-knitters. Sorry.
I have a knitting dilemma. Nothing life-or-death, or even terribly exciting, but it’s something that comes up often enough that I thought I should mention it.
I’ve been working on my Laminaria (that’s a Ravelry link – login required) for a while now, and it’s been going incredibly smoothly. The pattern is complex enough to be interesting, but repetitive enough to still be relaxing, and by following a few rules – the main one being “No Lace On The Morning Commute” – I have been error-free. Until now.
What to expect
June 13, 2008After attending the Teacher’s College Admitted Students Arbitrary Two-Day Period Weekend last Friday and Saturday, I feel both better prepared to enter grad school… and scared out of my mind. I’m not sure if they purposely designed this event to evoke both of these emotions in such a rapidly-alternating way, but they did a damn good job of it. (more…)
